Martina O’Neill, Development Officer of Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark comes to us this week as Wilderness Featured Thinker via the DREAMING PLACE project by Anna Keleher  (recent Featured Thinker) and Claire Coté (Thinking Wilderness project co-director). As part of this project the two artists conducted interviews with a variety of people, including Martina. As a native of Northern Ireland and with her professional feet firmly planted in resource management, her take on the theme of “wild” add a valuable strand to the conversation around wilderness. This week, we are joined by psychotherapist and researcher, Adrian Harris presenting his essay, “Where is Wilderness?

What do we mean by wilderness? Some claim that the notion is misleading romanticism or simply describes a kind of museum of nature (Talbot). Can we challenge such critiques or must we abandon the idea of wilderness altogether? An alternative is  to step sideways and instead of trying to answer the question posed by the current debate – i.e. what is wilderness? – we consider something altogether more puzzling: Where is wilderness?
